100 favourite films — pt. 1

It’s easy to get bored during lockdown. Watching movies helps. Thinking about all the great examples of cinema you’ve seen throughout the years is almost staggering — making you wish you’d written it all down. When I was a child I used to collect the tickets to films I’d been to with my family. The poetry of the ink and one’s memory, fading away in tandem was poignant. I used to write little quotes from each film on the back, so I could remember which film the ticket was for even after it had faded into oblivion.

This year I started making a list of my 100 favourite films, in the hope that it would reinvigorate my memory and perhaps bring back memories of some fond moments. Instead, I found the main problem was not recalling the feeling or the plot, but often the title of the film itself. Which can be a problem when you are making a list of titles. Anyway, the first part including my top 25 shouldn’t be that hard to settle on. Here goes (all the lovely stills are from mubi.com and I do not claim to have the copyright to any of these images, if anyone requires an image removed just leave a comment).
